Mr. Garvie Odell Chambers, 92, of Greensboro, NC, departed this earthly life peacefully on February 13, 2017, after a brief illness.

The funeral service will be held 11:00am, Thursday, February 16, at Southside Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC, where he was a faithful member, with Dr. Howard McNeill, Reverend James Gunter and Reverend Steve Walsh officiating. Graveside services will also be on Thursday at 2:00pm at Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Elkin, NC.

Mr. Chambers was born in Wilkes County on April 4, 1924, to the late Gordon A. Chambers and Allene Seagraves Chambers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen S. Chambers; his sister, Mrs. Ann Lee Chambers Shores and her husband, Beauford Shores; and a brother, R.C. Chambers.

Surviving include a son, Ronald David Chambers and wife, Glenda Hunter Chambers of Greensboro, NC; his grandson, J.D. Chambers of Pleasant Garden, NC; great grandchildren, Tristan and Carly Chambers that he cherished very much; sister-in-law, Naida Burchett Chambers of State Road, NC (wife of R.C. Chambers); two nieces, Susan Sewell and Patricia Vaughn; also his very special friend whom he loved very much, Dolores Wright of Greensboro, NC.

Mr. Chambers served in the 3rd Army of World War II at Staff Sergeant in the European Conflict. After he was discharged from the Army, he attended and graduated from Industrial Institute School in Chicago and became a contractor holding North Carolina state licenses in electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning. He formed Commercial Service Company in Elkin, an electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning corporation doing extensive contracting in Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin, and Forsyth Counties. He also enjoyed being a real estate broker and developing real estate. Mr. Chambers developed a successful Therm-Shield Insulation Manufacturing Company in Elkin which was later sold to a firm in Ohio. He owned and operated Greensboro Pipe Company, a family corporation, for 32 years in Greensboro, NC and sold the company in 2000. He continued to manage his real estate and rental businesses which he enjoyed staying active.

Mr. Chambers was a deacon and loved the brotherhood work and was faithful to all church activities. He had a heart for missions locally and foreign which he generously supported. He loved to serve on long range projects and had dreams and visions for the church growth.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 15, 2017, from 5-8:00pm at George Brothers Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
