Mr. James “Donald” Hutchens, 74,was surrounded by his family when he was called Home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 17, 2018. He was born in Reidsville, NC on December 1, 1943. He was a courageous fighter to the end. Fighting heart disease, open heart surgery, 12 stents, strokes and other failing health issues for the past 27 years. In the end it was undiagnosed lymphoma that he lost his battle to. Cancer does not care who it takes, or who it hurts. It comes into your life and starts to break the threads that hold you and you are left to see pieces of yourself slip away and dreams fade. The end is when the most amazing thing happens, cancer loses its strength and grace appears. We need to see it. We accept it, and go with it. Grace and love win, not cancer.
He is preceded in death by his parents William and Mary Sparks Hutchens. He was the last surviving sibling of four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his spouse of 37 years Brenda Hutchens of the home. Step-daughters Tracy Fulk (Leonard Stump) of High Point, NC, Teresa Rowe (Joe Cox) of Greensboro, NC, step-granddaughter Kimberly Fulk (Aaron Rauf) of the home. Nephews Ricky Hutchens, Butch and spouse Ruby Hutchens of Reidsville, NC. Nephew Jeff Haynes of Yadkinville, NC and numerous cousins. Lastly, his beloved Boston Terrier “Taz”.
He worked for the City of Greensboro as a Surveyor supervisor for 24 years until health issues forced him into early retirement in 1994.
In earlier years he enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing golf, racket ball and was an avid Braves, Tar Heels and NASCAR fan of Dale Earnhardt. Later in life he enjoyed raising a garden, working in the yard, working on cars and his Corvette. He loved spending time with family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand in any situation.
Donald was witty, funny and had a dry sense of humor, he was a very direct, bottom line and down to earth person, and you always knew where you stood with him, he taught others to standup for themselves, speak up and be yourself. He loved God, his Country and family with all his being.
The family would like to thank Doctors Hopper, Stuckey and Cheek for their care and compassion. We are most grateful to Hospice Palliative Care for making the final journey Home filled with peace, respect and love.
A graveside celebration of life will be held for all to attend on Wednesday, February 21, at 1:00pm in Forest Lawn Cemetery with Reverend Jeff Scronce officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Greensboro, Cancer research or a charity of your choice.
George Brothers Funeral Service is assisting the Hutchens family.
