Robert Lindsay ManessFebruary 28, 1926 ~ May 1, 2017 (age 91)
Robert Lindsay Maness, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1st. He was born February 28, 1926 in Robbins, NC.
As a boy, he helped his grandfather on the family farm before leaving to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He joined the US Navy in 1942 to serve in World War II in the Pacific Corridor with the 7th Fleet. He was married to Sarah Grubbs in 1948 and they had 4 children. He retired from the textile industry where he worked for over 40 years as a weaver. Robert was a travelling man and he enjoyed traveling with his children to places like Gulf Port, TX, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and Myrtle Beach, SC . He was a storyteller and loved telling them any willing ear. He valued his family above all and enjoyed hosting year round cookouts at his home.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Lendo and Mary Farrington Maness, and his brother, William “Bill” Ogburn Maness. He is survived by his 4 children, spouses, grandchildren and spouses, and great-grandchildren: daughter Pamela Varner (Kelly) of Spencer; daughter Karen Olmsted (Brad) of Liberty; son Howard Maness (Janet) of High Point; daughter Mary Jenkins (Greg) of Greensboro. Granddaughter Elizabeth Varner (Andrew Ogilvie), of Baltimore, MD; granddaughter Meghan Varner, of Spencer; grandson Aaron Deel (Ashley) of Greensboro, NC; granddaughter Rebecca Deel of Greensboro; grandsons Carson Maness and Matthew Maness of High Point; granddaughter Tina Brinkley (Steve) of Whitsett. Great-grandchildren Cody and Kristina Deel of Greensboro and Mason, Sienna, and Huntleigh Brinkley of Whitsett. Robert also leaves behind a special companion, Marie Keaton.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association. Flowers will be received at George Brothers Funeral Home. Family will receive friends Thursday, May 4th 6-8pm at George Brothers Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 5th at 2:00pm at George Brothers Funeral Home. Immediately following, a graveside service with military honors will be held at Lakeview Memorial Park.
