Roy C. “Scrooge” Jones, 91, died on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Beacon Place. He had been comforted in his last days by the presence of family and friends, and his passing was peaceful.
Roy was born in Greensboro on August 16, 1920. He was the son of Arthur Clinton Jones and Juanita King Robbins.
Roy, one of the original adventurous “Glenwood Boys,” was a respected Greensboro painting contractor for over 60 years. He also worked as an Auxiliary Fireman with the Greensboro Fire Department for over 30 years, loving all the action and camaraderie. He was a 50+ year member of the Oddfellows/Buena Vista Lodge #21. Roy was an avid vegetable gardener, working tirelessly each spring and summer on his bounty – well into his 80’s. He loved fishing at Ocean Isle Beach, and spent his birthday week there yearly, including his 90th. He had a fun-loving character, a quick wit that always made people laugh, a compassionate heart, and a most generous spirit. Roy especially enjoyed spending time with his large family.
Roy was preceded in death by his first wife, Modena Roberts Jones, son Graham Matthews, and son John David Jones.
He is survived by his wife Susie Taylor Jones, son Rodney Jones (Sherry), daughters Marlene Johnson (Bobby), Wanda Kersey, Jane Dovan (Emil); daughters-in-law, Betty Matthews and Bea Veto; step daughters Carol Cummings (Bob), and Sandra Taylor; twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Also brothers Elmer Jones (Aileen), Ernest Jones, and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Glenwood Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave, GSO NC 27405, or to a favorite ministry or charity.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Greensboro who along with grandson Wade Kersey, cared for Roy so faithfully and compassionately.
