Dale Koutsky Obituary

Dale Swan Koutsky, 86, passed away July 2, 2018 at his home in Greensboro, NC.

Dale was born October 11, 1931 in Omaha, NE to John and Ann Koutsky.  From his boyhood home called Cardinal Canyon, he and his younger brother, Dean, would walk to a one-room schoolhouse. The boys raised chickens and tomatoes. So many tomatoes that Dale would load up his red wagon daily to try to give them away to neighbors. He loved tomato preserves, but not the big garden. Dale graduated from Bellevue High School and attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He had many lifelong friends from Omaha.

Dale was adventurous.  He would drag race his Ford and race boats, and spent family vacations at Huddles Resort on Minnesota’s Leech Lake where he became an excellent water-skier and fishing guide.  An interest in photography led him to become a professional photographer.

Dale had four children with wife, Georgeanna Walton, and the adventures didn’t stop. He became a pilot while working at Air Service in Greensboro, NC.  On weekends, he loved sailing on Belew’s Lake. During the winters he took the kids to every boat and car show in town. He learned to roller skate and worked at the skating rink to be with his kids. With his parent’s retirement to Florida, many family vacations were spent there filled with boating, beach trips, and theme parks.

In 1983, Dale married Susan Miller Long.  Together they filled their lives with family, friends and church, spending time at their mountain cabin just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Galax, VA and at Foxfire Village near Pinehurst, NC. Vacations were often spent at Topsail Beach, NC.

Dale was an accountant by trade.  But it was his last job that brought him the most pleasure. In retirement, he drove a shuttle bus for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He loved the college kids and was popular among the students.

He was known for his calm personality, and gentle spirit, and his “one liner comments”. He never met a stranger and would talk to anyone.  He was always upbeat and optimistic.

Dale is survived by his wife, Susan Miller Koutsky; son, Keith Koutsky and wife Carole of Durham, NC and granddaughter Dana Koutsky of Omaha, NE;  son, Cliff Koutsky and husband, Peter Chipperfield, of Atlanta, GA; daughter Karen Koutsky of Denver, NC; daughter, Colleen Paul and husband John, step-grandson Michael Paul of Huntersville, NC; step-son, Allen Long and wife Lynn, of Browns Summit, NC; step-grandson, Jamie Long of Browns Summit, NC.  Dale is also survived by his brother, Dean Koutsky and wife Kathy of Minneapolis, MN and two nieces, Linda Koutsky and LIsa Sten, and great niece Greta.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, July 22th, at 3pm at Gospel Baptist Church in Greensboro. The family will receive friends at 2pm before the Service.
