Dorothy Louise (Smitherman) East

Mrs. Dorothy Smitherman East, 92, passed away Monday, March 26, 2018 at her home with her family by her side.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at George Brothers Funeral Service with Pastor Greg Creed officiating.  Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

Dorothy was a member of Groometown United Methodist Church.  She loved to spend time tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, and enjoyed sewing.  She was an avid reader and her grandchildren were the light of her life.

Mrs. East was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jesse “Darrell” East; infant son, David Martin East; parents, John and Fannie Smitherman; and brother, John “J.B.” Smitherman.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Shelton (Tony); son, John East (Vicky); son, William “Billy” East (Vicki); grandchildren, Jason, Tara, Jesse, Daniel, and Benjamin; nine great grandchildren; sister in law, Mary Smitherman; and host of family and friends whom she loved.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro 2500 Summit Ave. Greensboro NC 27405 or to the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to express their heartfelt “Thank You” to Dorothy’s caregivers, Libby Swink and Penny Patterson for their care and support during her illness.
