Harvey Smith Obituary

Harvey Carlson Smith, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 6, 2019.  A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 9, 2019 at Pleasant Garden Baptist Church with the Reverend Mike Barrett officiating.  The family will receive friends at 12:30 prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant UMC, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty NC 27298.
Harvey was born January 2, 1924 in Guilford County to the late J. Fletcher and Virgie Lineberry Smith.  He was the second of nine children.  He attended Nathaniel Greene School and graduated from the GTCC Adult Program in 1970.  He was a faithful church member of several churches during his lifetime and most recently was a member of Pleasant Garden Baptist.  He retired from Neese’s Country Sausage at the age of 88 after 50 years of full-time and part-time service.
Harvey married Margaret Louise Needham in 1948.  She was the love of his life who went home to be with the Lord in 2017.  They had 69 years of a wonderful marriage in which their love for each other was an inspiration to family and others who knew them.   By the example that he lived, he demonstrated to his sons the priority of faith in God as well as the importance of family, hard work and honesty. He loved his three daughters-in-laws as his own and was a loving grandfather to his five cherished grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Harvey especially enjoyed gardening, being on his tractors, woodworking and taking trips with his family and friends.  Later in life he even took up golf to spend time with his sons.  He left the social calendar to Mom, but was always willing to participate in whatever she planned. He loved the Lord and set the example for his family in daily Bible reading and being a servant leader in the Church.
Left to cherish his legacy and memories are Stephen Smith (Regina), Roger Smith (Sheila), and Gary Smith (Marilyn).  He loved and cherished his grandchildren, Stacy Smith (Trent), Justin Smith, Brian Smith (Ashley), Joshua Smith (now reunited together), and Jordan Smith.  He is survived by his sister, Shirley Bentley (Earl).  He was proceeded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Elsie Bentley and Katie Byrd; and four brothers, J.F., Ernest, Fred and Jack Smith. The care-givers at Spring Arbor Assisted Living and Memory Care are especially thanked for their loving and attentive care to him these past two years since Margaret’s passing.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Garden Baptist Church, 1415 Neelley Road, Pleasant Garden, NC 27313 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
