Helen Chambers Obituary

Mrs. Helen Virginia Laster Chambers, 93, of Greensboro, went home to be with her Savior on Jan 23, 2020 at Beacon Place Hospice Center.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday Feb 1, at Rehobeth Baptist Church, with Pastor Tim Duncan officiating. The burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.

Helen was born July 9th, 1926 in Guilford County to the late Henry Haywood Laster and Adela Elizabeth Reeves Laster, and was the eighth of nine children. Her high spirit and fun loving personality carried her through many trials and tribulations throughout her life including the tornado of 1936, the Great Depression, as well as losing a brother in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.

In 1956, Helen married Robert D. Chambers Jr, the love of her life. She had worked at various jobs to support herself and her family, including waitressing, cashier work, and the one she was most proud of, a nurse’s assistant in the local hospital. However, eventually she landed a position at Vick’s Chemical Company, where she would later retire. But even in retirement, her high spirit and need to be moving led her to operating Mid-State Removal Service, in which she traveled many miles and met many people.

In later years, Helen enjoyed watching and spending time with her grandchildren and was happiest when surrounded by family. She also loved to travel and meet people. One of her favorite destinations was Nashville, TN, where she had built quite a rapport with many of the stars, and knew them on first name basis. She never lost her keen sense of adventure and her willingness to always provide a smile. Helen brought an awful lot of love and joy to a lot of people’s hearts, and she will be sorely missed.

Helen is survived by her husband Robert D. Chambers Jr. (Donnie); sons, Robert D. Chambers III (Kelly) and Billy Ray Chambers (Lorette); along with two honorary daughters, Robin Pait (Neil) and Kelly Chambers; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Preceded in death was her son Andrew D. Chambers.

The family will receive friends from 6-9:00 on Friday at George Brothers Funeral Service.
