Mildred Nicholson Phifer

Mildred Nicholson Phifer, daughter of the late John Henry and Lottie Nicholson, was born May 23, 1927 in Mocksville, North Carolina. She was raised by her father and stepmother Connie Houpe Nicholson upon her mother’s passing. On Sunday, June 17, 2018, Mildred was called to her heavenly home and departed from her earthly life.

Mildred was a former member of Piney Grove AME Zion Church (Mocksville) and attended Mount Olive AME Zion Church in Greensboro. She was educated in the Davie County Public Schools. She furthered her education at Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing and was employed for many years as a nurse. Mildred was known for her gentle nature, caring ways, and infectious laugh. She met life’s challenges head-on with a fierceness and determination admired by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Eva Laniece Phifer Sharpe of Salisbury, NC, Sharon Phifer Vincent (Christopher) of Ladson, SC, and Laura Phifer Stokes (Kelvin) of Reidsville, NC; and one son, William Phifer (Janet) of California, Maryland; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Louise Phifer and a grandson, Torris Antwuane Phifer.
