Dewitt Calvin
Thompson
Jun 4, 1932 — Dec 25, 2023
Around 3:30 am on Christmas morning the Lord decided to gift himself a most amazing angel and take home the most wonderful father, husband, friend, and faithful follower, Mr. Dewitt Calvin Thompson. The Lord blessed us with 91 years to love and learn from this amazing man. We cannot say how grateful we are for the time the Lord allowed us to have.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday at Lawndale Baptist Church with Dr. Jon Boling officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The burial will be at a later date at Salisbury National Cemetery.
He was born June 4th, 1932, on a small tobacco farm in Johnston County, NC. He was the 4th of 8 children. He was involved with the ROTC in his high school and volunteered for naval duty after his graduation. His tour of duty included a stint on the USS Boxer in the Korean theatre of combat. During his naval service he met his future wife, (Shirley Hinnant), on his first leave and that love story never ended. Dewitt enrolled in college at NC State University, got married and had a boy (Dewitt Calvin Thompson Jr), and earned a degree in Parks and Recreation. He took his small family and ended up working for the parks and recreation department in Richmond, VA. During this time in Richmond, they decided to add another son,(Kenneth Ranson Thompson) to their brood. After a stop in Durham, Dewitt moved the family to Greensboro and settled down. He then earned a masters degree in Parks and Recreation from UNC, worked as director of Parks for Greensboro and then taught at A&T State University until he retired. With his wife Shirley he spent his retirement years giving back to the community through the church and The North Carolina Campers on Mission. He spent his life in service to his family and to God and if there is one thing that he taught us and he would wish for us all to do is to "keep the Lord in front".
Along with his parents, Dink and Maudie Thompson, he was preceded in death by his son, Dewitt Calvin "Cal" Thompson, Jr. and his siblings, Joy Hocutt, Grady Thompson, Felton Thompson, Effie Richardson, Norma Nell Price, Ransom Thompson and Scarlett Thompson.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Shirley Ann Thompson; his son, Ken Thompson; his grandchildren, Luke Thompson, Ben Thompson and Zack Thompson and his great grandchildren, Ezra Thompson and Eden Thompson.
