Obituary

On November 1, 2022, Elizabeth "Joy" Young Merrill departed this earthly land to enter her heavenly home where Jesus her Lord, along with her son, Justin Daniel Merrill and her brother, Michael Young, Jr., were waiting to receive her.

Joy lived her name well, where she knew the joy of the Lord was her strength.  The Homecoming service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Glenwood Friends Meeting, with Reverend Mike Barrett, in the presence of many friends.  The burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 am at the church prior to the service.

Joy was born July 25, 1965 and grew up in Glenwood Friends Church where she received the Lord as her personal savior. There are many fond memories of those who grew up together with her.  Joy attended several schools and had earned a scholarship in artistic drawing, but motherhood led to a future in medical related work. She will be remembered for her work at Greensboro Orthapedics (now Emerge Ortho), Spine and Scoliosis, and WhiteStone.

Joy loved sports and early on ran track and played softball.  She enjoyed watching sports, walking the Greenway, traveling to the mountains. She was huge Pittsburgh Steelers Fan.  She was known as the "Leaf Looker".  She loved the fall season with the beautiful fall colors of the changing "Fallen Leaves".  It is well known that she especially loved sunflowers.

Joy had regularly attended church, but recently was unable to because of her health.  She diligently fought a hard battle with Triple Negative Breast Cancer for three years.  But as the Lord closes one door here, he opens up a new star in Heaven above.  God gave us a memory for a reason, so our loved ones are not gone from us completely.  They live on in our memory forever.

She is survived by her son, James Brandon Merrill (Laura); fiancé, Gregg Cox; parents, Dr. Michael and Virginia Young; grandchildren, Emmett, Elliott, and Carter; sister, Sharon Mills (Mark); her nieces, nephews, family and friends whom she loved.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC 27203, or Glenwood Friends Meeting, 2400 Old Chapman Street, Greensboro, NC 27403.
