Mr. Gary Wayne Wood, 79, passed away Friday, December 9, 2022, at Wesley Long Hospital.

A graveside service will be at 2:00pm Monday at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, NC.

Gary was born July 14, 1943, in Guilford County to the late C.F. Wood and Thelma Harris Wood. He was a graduate of Pleasant Garden High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army as a paratrooper and served honorably with the 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagles."

He was the founder of D&D Asphalt, Inc in Greensboro. He was a member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge #714 and the American Legion Post #53.  He loved to collect cars, was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed traveling and spending time at Daytona Beach.

In addition to his wife Elois Wood of 53 years, he was preceded in death by his son Danny Smith.

He is survived by his children Dean Smith (Julie), Darrell Wood (Karen), and Dwayne Wood (Dawn).  Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Caressa (Jason), Darren, Heather, Caleb, Daniel (Meredith), Mackenzie, Kylie, and Drake, as well as two great-grandchildren, Carson, Paisley, and another on the way.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to American Legion Post #53 at 729 Creek Ridge Rd. Greensboro, NC 27406 or the American Wounded Warrior Project.
