James Richard ("J. R.") Shoffner, Jr., 81, went to his Heavenly home on March 14, 2023.

He served in the US Air Force, and was an electrician by trade. He retired from the Greensboro News and Record in 2005. Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking, beekeeping, butterfly houses, and, above all, supporting and spending time with his family. Along with his strong faith and positive attitude, he will be most remembered for his quick wit, kindness, and gentle spirit.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, daughter, Kim, parents, Richard and Edna Shoffner, and step-mother Mildred Shoffner.

He is survived by his sons Rick (Leann) and Danny (Hyun), daughter, Debbie (Pete), sisters, Bernice May (Fred) and Shelby Jean McClean (Jerry), step-brother, Charles Rumbley (Patsy), and step-sister Linda Daniels. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews, and caregivers.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ. Visitation is at 2:00, followed by a service at 3:00.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Hope UCC, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or the Parkinson's Foundation.
