Julus
Locklear
Jan 22, 1934 — Aug 18, 2026
Greensboro
Julus Locklear, 92, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, after an extended illness. He was born on January 22, 1934, in Pembroke, North Carolina to Bessie Locklear of the Prospect Community.
After graduation from the NC School for the Blind in Raleigh, NC, Julus moved to Greensboro for employment at the Industries of the Blind. It was here in Greensboro that Julus met Macy Duncan, the love of his life on a blind date. Along with Macy, Julus built a life and a beautiful family in the Triad. His concern for others was evident in the way he lived and gave of his time.
Julus was a founding member of Guilford Native American Association (GNAA), where he served on the Board of Directors for many years, working tirelessly for the benefit of all Native people in the Triad. During Julus's board tenure, he earned a reputation as the board's unofficial attorney, due to his solid advice and insight. In addition to the GNAA Board, Julus served on various other state and local organizations, including 37 years as a Volunteer Fireman with Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire Department. He was a member of the Guilford County Mental Health Board for 10 years, NC Indian Housing Authority, NC Commission of Indian Affairs, United Methodist General Council for 5 years, and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church.
Julus was incredibly proud of his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He loved sharing about his Native culture, his upbringing, and his fond memories of growing up "down home".
Julus enjoyed many pursuits including appliance repair, gardening, spending time with his family, and listening to his favorite teams - the Duke Blue Devils and the Chicago Cubs. Julus was an avid exerciser, often sharing his daily routine for any who showed an interest. Julus's ability to recall family history with precision was something to witness. He was preceded in death by wife of 67 years, Macy Locklear. He is survived by daughters Diana Locklear and Denna Lambke (Jay); grandchildren Shea Heiman (Greg) and Hunter Murray, great-grandchildren Atlas Heiman and Brooks Heiman.
The funeral service will take place Saturday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Burnett's Chapel Church, with interment to follow.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care shown to Julus throughout his time at Blumenthal Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Donations may be made to Guilford Native American Association (GNAA) Elders Fund at PO Box 5623, Greensboro, NC 27435.
