Obituary

Peggy Ann West Scroggs, 92, of Elon, formerly of Goldsboro died November 24, 2023 at Hospice House in Burlington.

A private graveside service will be held at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro.

Peggy was born June 6, 1931, in Goldsboro, NC to the late W. Houston West and Lotha Van Hoy West. She attended Goldsboro High School, graduated from Wake Forest College (in Wake Forest) in 1953 and began a teaching career that spanned four decades. On her birthday in 1954, as she sang in the choir on that Sunday morning, Peggy smiled at a friend of hers in the congregation. Sitting next to her friend was a young man that had recently moved to Goldsboro to work at Wayne Dairy. The young man's mother had given him two instructions when he moved: first, find a good church to attend and second, find a good Christian girl to marry. He thought Peggy was smiling at him and just had to meet this beautiful lady. They married ten months later on April 7, 1955.

Peggy was saved as a teenager and all through her life sought the Lord with all her heart. She taught high school in the North Carolina public school system for more than sixteen years. In 1971, she was led by the Lord to teach in private church schools for the remainder of her teaching career. Peggy's desire was to inspire her students to achieve success in life, not just academic success, but more importantly, spiritual success in serving the Lord and glorifying Him. At the time of her death, Peggy was a member of McLeansville Baptist Church in McLeansville, NC.

Along with her parents, Peggy is preceded in death by her brother, William "Billy" H. West, Jr.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years, J. Alan Scroggs; son, Jim Scroggs of Drexel Hill, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ernie Wyrick of Delta Junction, AK; sister-in-law, Shirley West; brother-in-law, Don Sturkey; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
