Ava Lee Dyer McQueen, 97, passed away at her home on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00pm on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at George Brothers Funeral Service with funeral beginning at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
Ava was born in Polk County, NC. At a young age, her family moved to Troy, NC where she grew up. At 16 she moved to Greensboro, NC where she met and married J.C. McQueen after he returned from WWII.
She loved to travel almost anywhere, but the beach was her favorite place. She was well known and loved at Lakewood Campground, Myrtle Beach, SC where she camped in her Chinook Motorhome since 2000.
She was always ready for some fun and adventures, going to Glace Bay, NS to visit with friends at 80, Hawaii at 86, PNC-Charlotte to see Jimmy Buffett, and NYC at 90. She cooked and baked for neighbors, friends, and family. It was her joyful gift to others. If you came to her house for a visit you knew you would be given food to take home. She was known in our family for her homemade biscuits.
She was the loving rock of her family. She was grateful for every day that God allowed her to get up and get going.
There were always stories to be told and places to go.
She loved seashells, butterflies, flowers, music, and a happy or funny movie. Oh, and clothes and shoes that always had to match.
She was fiercely independent and sometimes stubborn. Whatever she said, was the way it was going to be.
She had a heartwarming smile and laughter that drew people into her life. She had so many amazing friends that loved her dearly.
She was one of a kind because God made her extra special.
Preceded in death by her husband John C. McQueen, son Jay Scott McQueen, parents Della Mae Melton Dyer and Walter E. Dyer, sisters Eva Mae Haywood and Mary Davis, brothers Ray Dyer and Will Dyer.
Survived by daughter Senda McQueen Atkinson. Grandchildren Luke White (Sarah), Becky Warwick (Mike), Jesse White ( Morgan). Great grandchildren Carter White, Caleb White, Camden White. Cassidy White, Payton Warwick, Allie Warwick, Jackson White, and Waylon White. Brother Clinton Dyer (Alice).
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your local soup kitchen or deliver a meal to someone in your neighborhood. That would make her happier than anything else.
Live streaming of the service will be available on this page.
