Charles “Charlie” Conrad Stamey, 90, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 8, 1934, in Lawndale, NC, to the late C. Warner Stamey and Linda Bridges Stamey.
Charlie was a devoted husband to his wife, Patsy Craver Stamey. They shared 68 years of marriage, having wed on March 3, 1957. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith, and service. He was the proud father of Beverly Brown (Barry), Elizabeth Allen (Brian), and Chip Stamey (Liza). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Brad, Lauren (Tom), Joshua (Mary), Lindsey (Kevin), Charlie, Chaz (Annie), Craver (Hannah), Eliza Jane, and Ellie, as well as his four adored great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Sara Stamey Hodgin, and his brother, William Keith Stamey.
Charlie graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1952 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Wake Forest College in 1956. Following his graduation, he attended Naval Air Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and proudly served his country as a LTJG in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was last stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland.
A man of dedication and vision, Charlie was the second-generation owner of Stamey’s Barbecue in Greensboro, where he faithfully carried on the family tradition of serving Lexington NC style barbecue for 40 years. His passion and contributions to the craft were recognized in 2024 when he was inducted into the North Carolina Barbecue Hall of Fame.
Charlie will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the way he lived his life—with kindness, humility, and generosity. He was a true Renaissance man, finding joy in classical music, opera, and literature. His lifelong pursuits included gardening, golfing, woodworking and flying. He served his employees, church and community with a compassionate heart.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Irving Park United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC.
