Chester Lawrence Pegram, Sr.

Mr. Chester L. Pegram, Sr., 90, of Greensboro, formerly of Browns Summit, died Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Chester resided with his daughter Tonya and Pete Inman. Tonya, along with his granddaughter Felita were his caretakers for many years.

A graveside service will be 3:00 PM Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Greenview Cemetery in Reidsville.

Chester was born in Henry County to the late Chester and Lena Pegram. He was a distinguished veteran of the United States Air Navy, whose early life was marked by achievements such as becoming an Eagle Scout and assisting his father in constructing homes. His professional journey included roles as a Fire Dispatcher for the city of Greensboro and a building inspector, culminating in over thirty years of service with the state of North Carolina, where he retired from the NC Department of Corrections in Wentworth after a decade. In addition to these responsibilities, Chester drove a truck, worked as a machinist, earned accolades as a marksman, and served as a police officer in Reidsville. Remarkably, he also dedicated time to fostering over fifty children alongside his wife.

Along with his parents, Chester is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Grey Mckinney Pegram; daughters, Carol Pegram and Sybil Pegram; sisters, Mona Brannon, Joan Vance, and Gail Hoecherl; along with a brother, Ralph Pegram.

He is survived by his children, Janet P. Johnson, Richard L. Pegram (Sylvia), Chester L. “Sam” Pegram, Jr., and Tonya P. Inman (Pete); and one brother, Wayne Pegram (Diana) of China Grove; grandchildren, Billy Cook (Lindsay), Kathy Cook, Hailey Johnson, Jason Pegram (Felita), Ginny Cruthis (Corey), Dalton Pegram (Stephanie), Kaitlyn King, Jessica Gillie (Ezekiel), Sydney Bowne (Hunter); and a host of great grandchildren.
