David Palmer Layton

David had a charismatic personality and a love for people that left a lasting impression. The effect that David had on his community and the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

David, born and raised in Greensboro, was an athletic boy and an excellent student. A graduate of Sumner High School and Elon University, David proudly enlisted in the Army in 1967. His military associations were a significant part of his life, and he carried the values learned during his service throughout his lifetime. In 1969, he returned to civilian life.

David was a dedicated individual who found success in various occupations before becoming a commercial plans examiner for the City of Greensboro. His commitment to serving his community extended beyond his professional life. He served as a PTA president, a member of the Summerfield Town Council’s Planning Board, and once as a float judge during the Summerfield Founder’s Day Parade.

After surviving a stroke, David dedicated his time to visiting stroke patients and writing articles for stroke-related magazines. David also traveled on behalf of the American Heart and Stoke Association providing information about prevention. This work led to him being asked to serve on The Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities.

A man of many talents, David was a skilled musician who played the guitar and sang at various venues. After that, he learned to play the dulcimer and continued to perform. David was also an enthusiastic sailor and a member of the Lake Townsend Yacht Club for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Harper Layton, his son David Jr., daughter-in-law Helle, and grandchildren Jonathan and Christina Layton.

A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at Rehobeth Church, 4475 Rehobeth Church Road, Greensboro, NC 27406.
