The angels came and escorted Dorothy Blanchard, 84, to her eternal home on March 28, 2021. Dot was born on February 19, 1937 in Pikeville, NC. She was all-county in girls’ varsity basketball and salutatorian of the Pikeville High School class of 1955. She graduated from Woman’s College (now UNC Greensboro) with a double major in Chemistry and Biology in 1959. After a year’s internship at Cone Hospital, she was employed at the infirmary of Woman’s College.
After her children were born, she stopped work and became an active mother and homemaker. Dot was president of the PTSA and active in the Boy Scouts and Brownies among many hobbies. She made her home the place where all the neighborhood kids wanted to hang out. She was also active in sharing her faith and talents with her Christian community. She was a leader of the MYF, led the church choir, played the piano for church, and taught both youth and adult Sunday school for many, many years.
Once the children were grown, Dot reentered the workforce at Greensboro OBGYN, where she started and administered the medical lab. She retired after approximately 20 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Elnora Mitchell and Ernest William Crumpler, and her brother Alton Crumpler. Surviving with cherished memories are her husband of almost 62 years, Robert Lee Blanchard, Jr, son, Scott Blanchard (Lisa Tucker), daughter, Dr. Anita Blanchard (David Dougherty), sister, Rose Hicks (Ray), five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at South Elm Street Baptist Church on Monday, April 5 at 2 pm. The family request that you practice social distancing and wear a face covering.
