Dorothy "Christine" Carr

Dorothy “Christine” Carr died peacefully surrounded by family on May 7, 2021. Born December 15, 1930 in Guilford County to the late Adam Walker Jordan and Fanny Ellen Nall Jordan, Christine was a tenacious and generous woman, never letting a guest leave her home without a plate of food, arrangement of homegrown flowers, and a glass of sweet tea. Christine was married to Dorsel Edwin Carr at the age of 17 and spent the rest of her life working hard and taking care of her four children. She was a smart and talented businesswoman, scooping ice cream at Mayberry Ice Cream Shop for 40 years. To customers, she was known as Mrs. Mayberry and she always called them by their names – Mr. Egg Salad, Mrs. Chicken Salad, etc. Christine hung up her scoop at her Mayberry Lee Street shop in 1996. “Retirement” was not in Christine’s vocabulary, though, as she spent the subsequent 30 years caring for her family and maintaining her bountiful gardens full of tropical hibiscus, day lilies, irises, and so many more. She was well known by friends and family for her entertaining “Southernisms.” Family favorites include “My get up and go’s done got up and went” and “How sweet it is!” In the last years of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her daughters Linda and Wanda, granddaughter Krystal, and caretaker Jo-anne Buck.

                In addition to her parents, Christine was preceded in death by her 13 siblings. Survivors include her sons Donald Carr (Linda) and John Carr (Pat) and daughters Linda Surber (Jim) and Wanda Truitt (George). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Jason Carr, Krystal Truitt, Craig Surber (Alex), Eric Surber, Christin Cecil (Tyler), and Lauren Shears (Matt), great-grandchildren Katie Carr and Ryder Surber, and many other extended family members and friends.

                A graveside service for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021, at 1:00 pm at Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery in Greensboro, NC.
