Frankie Culbreth Obituary

Mrs. Frankie Joanne Idol Culbreth, passed peacefully at home with her devoted husband by her side on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

Frankie was born October 9,1935 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Charles and Argie Idol. Life circumstances led her, at 4 years of age, to be raised by her Maternal grandparents, Frank B. and Nannie Mooney. This provided the foundation of love, peace, contentment and Spirit filled joy that would touch all who encountered her during her 87 years.

Educationally, Frankie spent all her school days at Sumner School where she excelled in many areas. She was socially loved, a consistent Honor Roll student and a superior athlete. She was named Most Athletic on the seniors superlative list and it was her exceptional skills on the basketball court that earned her the All County Basketball Star Award. Frankie graduated from Sumner School in June of 1954.

After Graduation, Frankie went to work for Southern Life Insurance Company and soon after, from 1956 to 1965 she turned to the life of a devoted Military wife. She established many households while seeing to the proper foundational needs of raising their 3 children across many duty stations between Myrtle Beach to Texas.

Upon the family’s return to Greensboro in 1965, the Church in which she grew up, Rocky Knoll Baptist, continued to be a significant and focal part of Frankie’s family and spiritual life until her death. She led and served in many areas where Children’s grades 1-6 were the focal point to include; Sunbeams, Girls Acteens, Children’s Church, Teams Kids and Vacation Bible School. Frankie also contributed to worship services with a beautiful Alto Voice, the Church Quartet and Praise Team. In honor of her many years of service to Children a new playground was constructed and dedicated in her name.

Professionally, between 1973 – 1993, Frankie brought her loving and guiding gift of teaching children to the Public School System in Guilford County as a Teaching Assistant. Hundreds of children benefitted from her endearing teaching methods. During this tenure she was the recipient of the Teacher Assistant of the Year award across the entire Guilford County School system.

All during her life, Frankie continued to actively pursue her love of athletics on the Tennis Courts, through Inter-Club Tennis and with other women who enjoyed the sport. She was in yearly honorary attendance of the Women’s ACC Basketball Tournament hosted in Greensboro.

Dearest to her heart was a yearly function she held for many years, “Grandma Camp”, a time where she could devote to loving, cherishing and spiritually guiding her grandchildren through activities consisting of movie going, skating, bowling, arts and crafts, fun meal preparation and a lifetime of memories.

Preceding Frankie in death were her sisters Jackie and June
