George Pennel Wheatland of Greensboro, North Carolina went to his heavenly home on March 19, 2025.
He was born August 10, 1930 in Glenside, Pennsylvania, the son of the late George and Catharine Wheatland. He met Beverly Jean Bruns in Champaign, Illinois. They got married May 22, 1954 and were married 66 years before she passed in June, 2020.
George attended elementary and high school in Glenside, Pennsylvania. He entered the Air Force in 1951 during the Korean Conflict and spent most of his time in the air training command at Chanute Air Force Base in Champaign County, Illinois. He served 4 years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. George started taking classes at the University of Illinois while still in the Air Force and graduated in 1958 with honors.
He majored in Marketing Research and was employed directly out of college at the William S. Merrell Company as a Marketing Assistant. Within 2 years, he became Director of Marketing Research in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1966, he and Bev moved to North Carolina where he was a District Sales Manager for 7 years. He then relocated to Madison, WI where he served as Regional Sales Manager for 4 years. George then accepted a position with Merck Pharmaceuticals in Greensboro, NC, where he later retired.
George was a faithful member of Westover Church in Greensboro. He served as a Deacon, member of the Building Committee, as well as the Finance Committee. He was baptized there by Pastor David Krentel.
George’s passions, beyond Bev, were daily exercise, including golf and swimming at the Greensboro Country Club, where he was a member for 45 years.
A service will be held at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum, 3601 Whitehurst Road, Greensboro, NC on Friday, March 28 at 2:00 pm.
