Gracie Mae (Byrd) Stone

Gracie Mae Byrd Stone, 90, passed away Monday, September 13, 2021 at her residence.

A Graveside Service will be Monday, September 20, 2021 at 11:00 am at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will also gather at other times at the home of Jack and Cindy Barnes.

Gracie was born January 4, 1931 in Guilford County to the late Eddie “Toy” and Bessie Mae Tilley Byrd. She worked as a CNA in the health care industry for many years until she was 81 years old. She made many friends doing a job she truly loved. She loved her church and church family at Friendship Baptist Church in Elon, NC .

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Stone; 2 sons, Alfred Calahan and Jerry Black; 2 grandsons, Scott Barnes and Craig Boone; a son in law, Jody Lewis; 7 brothers and 1 sister.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Carmen “Cindy” Barnes (Jack), Brenda Black Lewis and Patti Black McDaniel (Aaron) all of Reidsville; 2 sons, Richard Black (Kathy) of Greensboro and Farion Black (Christy McLean) of Shallotte; 2 daughters in law, Wendy Cheers Black (J.R.) of Shallotte and Ruby Calahan Wade of Greensboro; sister, Virginia Nelson (Johnny) of Greensboro; special friends, Liz Toler of Reidsville, Wayne Elliott and the Elliott family of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and most important her dog Spanky.

Because of the love of her job, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate a banquet of flowers to a lonely person in a nursing home or a shut in to honor her memory.

Also the family request memorial contributions be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 2541 Elon-Ossippe Road, Elon, NC 27244.
