Howard McDaniel Obituary

Mr. Howard Lavon McDaniel, 85, of McLeansville, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Moses Cone Hospital following a brief illness.

Graveside service will be held at Lakeview Memorial Park on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 3:00pm.

Mr. McDaniel was born in Dallas, Texas to the late James Howard McDaniel and Estella Barnes McDaniel. He moved all over the United States before moving to North Carolina. Howard served his country honorably and faithfully in the United States Navy, and in Vietnam. While Mac was in the service for 23 years his job was refueling jets on the USS Independence. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a truck driver for over 28 years driving long haul trips singing along to “On The Road Again” with his buddy Willie Nelson. When not traveling in his truck he enjoyed vacationing to Myrtle Beach and any mountains he could find. Howard was a kind-hearted friend to many with a bubbly personality that could not be matched. Mr. McDaniel also enjoyed playing golf with his son-in-law Rick, taking in the views of the entire course every time he played. Mac was an avid race fan, he liked to enjoy good food and shop at Lowes Hardware, and could always find time to wait on Carolyn.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Pamela Gambino, his sister Glynda Shaw, and brother-in-law Richard Dickerson.

Surviving is his wife Carolyn Carmichael McDaniel of 23years; daughters Susan Freeman (Neill) of Asheboro, NC, Patricia Chrismon (Rick) of Browns Summit, NC, and son-in-law John Gambino of Browns Summit, NC; grandchildren Kelly Hardin, April Chrismon (Kyle), Tyler Freeman, Taylor Freeman, and Lindsey Gambino; great-grandchildren Alexis Hardin, Raleigh Hardin, Jacob Hardin, Lucus Hardin, London Hardin, and one baby boy arriving soon; sister Lois Dickerson of Burlington, NC and brother-in-law Gary Shaw of Lumas, CA. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.
