James Long Averett was born on May 16, 1935 in Ontario Canada to James Long Averett of Oxford North Carolina and Clarice Mae Hall Averett of Keeling Virginia. He had three siblings; Ralph Averett (deceased), Benjamin Averett, married to Sharon Averett and Joan Averett Moore, married to Winston Moore.
On December 9, 1956 James “Jim” Averett married his “special angel” Joyce Jannette Strickland. They have three children; James Long Averett III married to Dawn Cook Averett, Cynthia Averett Barkett married to George R Barkett II (deceased) and Richard Thomas Averett married to Rachel Velting Averett. Jim and Jannette have ten grandchildren: Michael, Candy, Cameron, Clete, Ethan, Micah, Hallie (deceased), Caleb, Faith, and Abby. They also have seven great grandchildren: Mckayla, Bella, Celese, Camden, Alice, Jackson, and Landen.
As part of a very full life, Jim served God for many years as an elder, first in Worldwide Church of God then more recently here at Christ Way Church.
Funeral service, conducted by pastors Keith Kannenberg and Doug Huff, will be Friday July 22 at 2:00pm at Christ Way Church, 4401 Sumner Church Rd. in Greensboro, NC. Prior to the service there will be a slide presentation showing highlights from Jim’s bountifully blessed life.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to either your favorite charity or to one of the following organizations that Jim and Janette support; Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville NC, Samaritan’s Purse, Shepard’s House in Mt. Airy NC, Salvation Army, Wounded Warriors or St. Labre Indian School in Ashland MT.
