Jimmie Carolyn (Smith) Groome

Mrs. Jimmie Carolyn Smith Groome, 80, of High Point, passed peacefully on May 4, 2022, surrounded by family at Moses Cone Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday at The Groome Inn, 4719 Groometown Road, Greensboro, NC 27407.

Jimmie was born in Bedford County, Tennessee on March 29, 1942, to the late James Huland Smith and Ava Evelyn Brewer Smith. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred McIver “Mac” Groome, Jr.; her step mother, Aline Essie Hollis Smith; her daughter, Leslie Camille Groome Morgan and her grandson, Samuel Morgan. Jimmie grew up in a rural, mountain town in Tennessee. She lost her mother to cancer at 3 years of age. While her father was in the military, her grandparents, Archie and Shorty Brewer, raised her.  Jimmie spent the remainder of her youth in Indianapolis, Indiana where her father married Aline and gave her a brother. During frequent travels between Tennessee and Indiana, she met a traveling soldier on a Greyhound bus that became the love of her life. Mac and Jimmie were married May 12, 1962, and had four children. Jimmie made it to Groometown where she instantly became part of the family with a knack for caretaking and bringing the family together. Family gatherings were frequent, Jimmie was known for her fried chicken and chocolate pie. While raising her children she was active in all aspects and activities including PTA, Girl Scouts and Athletic Director for Westbury Athletic Association. Groometown history was important to her and she honored that by restoring an original Groome homestead into The Groome Inn. Jimmie operated the Inn with love until retirement. She moved into The Stratford Retirement Community where she found new friends and a continued purpose as a caretaker. Jimmie was a great wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and everyone she met felt welcome as her family. Jimmie had a tremendous personality and was generous with her love.

She is survived by her children, Fred Groome (Melissa), Julia Allred (Steve), Nell McCoury (James Pat); son-in-law, Rusty Morgan; her grandchildren, Zach Groome (Allie), Cody Groome (Kim), Cali Crane (Jared), Joshua Allred (Angie), Cameron Allred (Megan), Ewan Foster and Conway McCoury; great grandchildren, Holden Allred, Addie Allred, Aiden Loggins, Fisher Allred, Charlotte Crane and Jack Crane. She is also survived by her brother, Blaine Huland Smith (Brenda) and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
