John "Jack" Purgason Obituary

John Wayne “Jack” Purgason arrived at his final resting place on Sunday November 8, 2020.

 

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 2:00 pm at George Brothers Funeral Service with Pastor Kevin Kilbreth officiating.  Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

 

Son of John and Selma Purgason of Greensboro, NC, Jack was also fondly known as “Daddy” and “Paw-Paw”; to his buddies he was “Hotdog”. Jack is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginny) Middleton Purgason, sister Cynthia Oakley (Dan). Sister Yvonne Berkeley predeceased in 2015.  He is also survived by sons Donnie Purgason and Randal Purgason. Daughter Jackie Purgason Hucks predeceased in 2002. Also special family friends Dave Shearin and Eddie Nickerson.

 

Jack has 5 Grandchildren, April Gilbert, Julie Reddy, Zachery Hucks, Amber Hucks and Jonathan Purgason; additionally, 7 Great Grandchildren Rachel Hardy, Dylan and Madison Jowers, Bella Reddy, Axton Purgason, McKenley and Liam Hucks; and great-great grandchildren, Benton and Fisher Hardy.

 

Jack graduated from Greensboro Sr. High School where he was an athletic star in baseball and football. Jack also played baseball at Guilford College.  Jack took his athletic talents to the U.S. Army where he played baseball on the Army team. Jack is a U.S. Army Veteran.

 

Jack spent a 30-year career with the US Postal Service.

 

Jack was a happy Glenwood boy and was a Florida Street Baptist Church member. He carried neighborhood newspapers until a dog tore up his knickers.

 

Jack sent his best friend, Ernest Jones, to get Ginny for their first date, he had to play ball at the Glenwood field.

In addition to raising a family, Jack also enjoyed playing golf, fishing and vacationing in Florida; he was also a life-long UNC Tarheel fan.

Over the past 30 years, Jack and family vacationed every year on Oak Island, N.C. not far from where his mother and father spent their final years on Yaupon Beach. His children grew up going to the beach; they had children and then great grandchildren came along. Jack’s sisters, Ginny’s sisters and so many friends of the family spent time together every year on the family beach trip. Jack would start asking Ginny every spring, “when are we going to the beach?”

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
