Joycelyn "Sue" Flippin Obituary

Our mom, Joycelyn Sue Collins Flippin left her earthly home on Thursday, December 12, 2024 to sing with the heavenly angels.

She was born in Surry County on August 2, 1947, and was preceded in death by her parents, Bion Wesley and Joyce Jacquelyn Frye Collins; her brother Stephen Wesley Collins of Westfield, North Carolina; and son, Jeffrey Flippin.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Jimmie, of the home;  sons, Stephen (Lynda) of Arlington, Virginia, and William (Nicole) of Hartsville, South Carolina; and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Flippin. She has also been blessed with eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who will cherish her memory along with nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Faye Flippin of Winston-Salem; brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Laura Flippin of Westfield, North Carolina; and, former sister-in-law Sandra Collins Hooker of Westfield, North Carolina.

Mom grew up in the Francisco Community of Stokes County and was a member of the first graduating class at North Stokes High School. She joined the Francisco Presbyterian Church at age nine and sang in the choir, played the piano, and supported her pastor in the other three small churches he served during her teen years. She loved playing softball and was a cheerleader at both Francisco and North Stokes.  She went on to App State to pursue her teaching degree. She enjoyed teaching and her church work and moved her membership to the Bethel Presbyterian Church when she and dad built their home in the McLeansville Community in Guilford County. Mom served as a deacon and an elder at Bethel and worked with the women's group, children's choir, youth group, and other church activities. She sang in the choir and often sang for weddings and funerals in the church and community.

Mom served as a PTA officer at Sedalia, McLeansville, and Eastern Guilford High School and was President of the Athletic Boosters at Eastern Guilford twice.  Her life was always full as she encouraged and supported her sons by attending ballgames and being an example to us of a loving and caring mother. We often brought friends home with us and she just put a few more beans in the pot and invited our friends to the table with us.

She taught in Guilford County for 10 years. Leaving the teaching profession, she worked part-time at Gibsonville Post Office, Measurement Incorporated, World Book and Childcraft educational materials, and did private tutoring. Mom went to work at the Dye and Chemicals Division of Ciba-Geigy where she worked for six years in the colorfastness laboratory. She left Ciba-Geigy to keep twin grandchildren. After studying for the ministry, she was commissioned as a lay pastor in Salem Presbytery in October of 2001 and was installed as pastor of the Siler City Presbyterian Church in 2002 where she served until 2014. While serving as pastor in Siler City, she was a board member of Chatham Habitat for Humanity, served as a chaplain at Chatham Hospital, and was a member of the West Chatham Ministerial Association.

After leaving Siler City, she began doing supply ministry in Salem Presbytery churches and enjoyed meeting the different congregations and working with them. She also served on the Committee/Commission on Ministry and worked with the committee who had oversight for the CRE/CLP Program of Salem Presbytery.

Our mother knew that Jesus Christ was her Lord and Savior and she gave of His love and care to any who would allow her to do so. May her light continue to shine through each member of her family and many friends as we too serve as the hands, feet, and heart of Christ in the world.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 4 pm on Monday, December 16, 2024 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 300 Knox Road, McLeansville, North Carolina 27301 conducted by the Reverend Ray Mims and visitation with the family will follow the service in the fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to the church or the charity of one's choice.
