Mahlon Bernard Hancock, 88, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Vickrey Chapel Church, 5348 Vickrey Chapel Road, Greensboro. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm on Monday at George Brothers Funeral Service, 803 Greenhaven Drive, Greensboro, and at the home on Saturday evening, Sunday afternoon, and Monday morning.
Mahlon was born May 18, 1936 in Rockingham NC to the late Claude and Myrtle McKensie Hancock. He was raised in Greensboro and graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1954. In 1956 he was one of eighteen Greensboro Firefighter graduates in the first training class in the first training center on Church Street on August 1 of that year.
After a 30-year career and obtaining the rank of Captain, he retired in 1986. Thirteen months later, he returned to the workforce as a delivery driver for Thermal Control. After a decade with the company, he retired once more. Following another year of retirement, he joined ACR Supply, where he worked for an additional six years. He was a longtime member of Vickrey United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 55 years, Ellen Kirkman Hancock; oldest son, William Hancock in 2016; brother, Wade Hancock; and sisters, Margie Mendenhall, Shirley Hedrick, Catherine Hoover, and Carolyn Guffy.
Mahlon is survived by son, Robert “Bobby” Hancock and wife, Lorrie; daughter-in-law, Jean Hancock; grandchildren, Jessica Worden, Daniel Hancock (Ashley), Brant Hancock (Samantha), Whitney Gauldin (Chad), Mark Worden (Teresa), Heath Hancock (Brooke), Cristy Welch, and Frank Worden; great-grandchildren, Jaydon, Rianna, Katelyn, Elizabeth, Frank, Paityn, Mark, Lincoln, Ellie, Charlotte, Ben, Colton, Maddi, Audrey, Liam, Valley and Sunnie.
