On the morning of Sunday, September 21, 2025, Mary Elizabeth Baker Mabe, age 93, peacefully entered into eternal rest. Surrounded by grace and love, she was gently called home by her Heavenly Father, who welcomed her with the tender words, “Come home now, my sweet child.”
Elizabeth (who was known to all as Mama, Mamaw, Memaw, Lib, Libby, Aunt Lib or Aunt Beth), was born On March 26, 1932 in Stokes County, to parents, George Columbus Baker and Emily Frances Collins Baker.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Church Street Baptist Church, 3113 North Church Street, Greensboro, NC. Family will begin receiving friends at 11:30 am until 1:00 pm prior to the service.
At the young age of 14, Mary began her working life at a Bargain Store in Madison, NC, walking from school each day to her job. In her early twenties, she worked at a local dress shop before stepping away from the workforce for a time to devote herself fully to raising her three children—a role she cherished above all. Later, she resumed working at Brightwood Elementary School in Greensboro, NC, where she served in the cafeteria with care and dedication until her retirement. Never one to remain idle, she then opened her own daycare center, continuing her lifelong love for nurturing and guiding children.
She was the kind of mother every child hopes for—loving, wise, selfless, and strong. In 1952, she gave her heart to Christ, a decision that shaped the foundation of her life and her family. Together with her husband, she raised her children not only in church, but also in a home filled with faith, grace, and the teachings of Jesus. A faithful and fervent prayer warrior, she lifted her family, friends, and church community in prayer every single day.
One of her favorite scriptures was John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Her greatest desire was for every member of her family, and all those she loved, to one day join her in Heaven.
She was a member of Lake Townsend Baptist Church for over forty years and was a Sunday School teacher over thirty years. She later moved her membership to Church Street Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Earnest “Curly” Mabe, parents, George Columbus Baker and Emily Frances Collins Baker, brother, Clarence Jackson Baker, sister, Emily Eleanor Baker.
She is survived by sister, Kay Frances Baker Davis (Steve), daughter, Cheryl Sue Mabe Hall, sons, Joseph Timothy Mabe (Treva), Robin DeLane Mabe (Tammy), Grandchildren Tara Hart (Frankie), Lindy Kirkman, Brad Mabe, Michelle Carter (Tavares), Marissa Mabe, Ashtyn Greene (Ryan), Jordan Hartling (Kevin), Courtney Mabe (Scottie), Hilary Hardy (Zack), Brittany Noles (Jimmy), Justin Mabe, with numerous Great-Grandchildren and Great-Great Grandchildren.
