Mr. Howard Smith Obituary

James Emory “Howard” Smith passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at home. Howard was born on May 17, 1933, in Birmingham, Alabama. His life was marked by deep love, unwavering faith, and a lasting legacy of service and compassion for others. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War before pursuing his education at Clemson University. Following graduation, he built a distinguished career as a Senior Research Chemist with Lorillard Tobacco Company, where his dedication and expertise were widely respected. He lived with humility, strength, and a servant’s heart, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. Known for his quick wit and warm sense of humor, he brought joy to those around him. He made his home in Whitsett, North Carolina, where he was a steady presence for his family, church, and community.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anne Greeson Smith; his sons, Robert Smith (Rasma) and Alan Smith (Lori); his granddaughters, Taylor Smith and Madison Smith Hampton (Nathan); his stepdaughter, Terri Bolton (Craig); his step-granddaughter, Jordan Berry (Jeremy); and his step-great-grandson, Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his four sisters, Vera, Martha, Clara, and Melba; and his half-sisters, Dorothy Ann and Ina Grace.

A celebration of life service will be held on April 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Welkers Crossroads EMC, 3829 Old Julian Road, Julian, NC 27283. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to AuthoraCare Hospice, 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215, or to Welkers Crossroads Church in Julian, NC.

Howard will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his commitment to family, and his quiet strength. His legacy of love, service, and devotion will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know him.
