James M. Pierce, Jr, son of James and Marguerite Pierce, went to be with Jesus on October 20, 2023. With great caring from Hospice, he was able to stay at home – his Happy Place on Hyco Lake – until the end. Jim was born in Raleigh, NC on November 25th, 1943. He was a graduate of Cary High School and Campbell College after which he joined the USMC and proudly served for 6 years. He then began a long career with Burlington Industries and later the spin-off division which became BGF Industries. While there, he was awarded a patent for developing voice recognition in grading fabric.
Jim was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC for 44 years and more recently of Concord Church in Roxboro, NC. He faithfully served both churches sharing his talents as a woodworker, in I.T., and as “Mr. Fix-It” as well as serving as an ordained elder, Sunday School teacher and church treasurer. He truly had a Servant’s heart.
Jim and his wife, Betsy, were happily married for almost 57 years. Jim was a family man – he loved and was so proud of his two sons and his four grandsons. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His hobbies included woodworking – he made furniture for his family and for the churches of which he was a member. Fly fishing for trout in the mountains and for bass in Hyco Lake, where he most recently resided, were favorite activities for him. Among the words used by others to describe Jim are talented, intelligent, kind, generous, friend, sincere, compassionate. He was always looking for ways to help others.
Jim was predeceased by his parents and by his son Randy. He is survived by his wife Betsy Scarborough Pierce, his son Deik (Heather), his grandsons Keegan, Blake (Tara), Elliott and Oliver. Also surviving him are his sister Joyce Andrews (Ad), and his brother Tony as well as nieces and nephews.
