At 65 years young, Mr. Larry Dean McHone passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024, after an extended illness in the Duke University Heart Center Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Larry Dean McHone, son of the late Alonza Joseph (A.J.) McHone and Betty Worth McHone, was born on December 10, 1958, in Greensboro, N.C. and was one of six children.
Larry was the grandson of the late Robert Claude Worth and Lillian Valecie Worth of Mt. Airy, N.C.; and the late William Anderson McHone and Daisy Manring McHone of King, N.C.
Larry was a devoted son, brother, uncle, great uncle and friend to many. He never met a stranger. He lived a life dedicated to his family and friends. Larry called his mother daily to confirm she was doing well and often talked for hours with her about whatever was on their minds. Several times a month, he drove to his brother Rob’s home in Greensboro to visit with his nieces and nephews. Within his family and work environment, he became the trusted advisor and shoulder to cry on. His wisdom and guidance provided a quiet respite in times of uncertainty for all. Larry was a gentle giant whose sharp wit fueled a wonderful sense of humor that could bring anyone out of a dark mood.
Larry’s bright and curious mind, along with his attention to detail allowed him to excel in project management, developing processes, and finding patterns. He had a passion for music and was a gifted singer and musician. At an early age, he became the “go to” youth to sing for many events at church as well as he was the one in the family to pick up the guitar and begin singing at any family event.
Larry achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout at the young age of 14. His Eagle Project consisted of participating in the clearing of the land in Asheboro, N.C. which would later become the North Carolina Zoo.
He spent his free time crafting remixes of popular songs, as well as creating his own recordings, with which he loved to share. He enjoyed the philosophical, having long conversations about the meaning behind life’s joys and trials, solving problems, and the art to be found in everyday life. Larry was a respected mentor to the many people who came into his life.
Larry attended UNC-Greensboro, graduating in 1980 as a dual major with a Bachelor of Arts in both Communication and Psychology. While in college, he began work as a bartender and excelled at this until his decision to launch a career with Bank of America where he became a Vice President in Project Management. After a full career of 26 years of service with Bank of America, Larry decided to retire early in 2014. Within a few months, he quickly decided he didn’t want to retire completely and began the commute to work alongside his sister, Liz and her husband, at their family owned Home Infusion Pharmacy, Spectrum Infusion in Raleigh, N.C. Larry shared their home 3 days a week where he became part of their family dynamics right up until the day he was admitted to the hospital in March 2024.
Larry is survived by his loving and caring mother, Betty Worth McHone; wife of his late brother Donald (Don) J. McHone, Sally Kyler McHone and their children, William (Will) and Nicole; brother Michael A. McHone and his son, Benjamin (Ben); husband of his late sister Carolyn McHone Worthington, Frank Worthington, their daughter, Valecia Worthington Hopper and her children, Gehrig and Allie; sister Elizabeth (Liz) McHone Knight (husband Alan Knight) and their children, Worth, Reece and Payne; brother Robert (Rob) W. McHone (wife Edie McHone) and their children, Jack, Lillian and Dorothy (Dot).
Larry is preceded in death by his loving and devoted father, Alonza Joseph (A.J.) McHone; his brother Donald (Don) J. McHone and nephew Donald J. (Joey) McHone, Jr.; his sister Carolyn McHone Worthington; and his cherished dog, Jessie.
The family wishes to share gratitude to the professional healthcare staff at Moses Cone Hospital Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Duke University Heart Center Cardiac Intensive Care Unit who touched his life.
A celebration of Larry’s Life will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 9, 2024, at Mount Pisgah Church, in Greensboro, N.C., with Reverend Dr. Jeff Johnsen officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy, N.C at 5 o’clock.
