Mr. Richard Monroe Sumner of Greensboro, age 84, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday at George Brothers Funeral Service. The family will receive friends following the service on Saturday. The service will also be livestreamed at www.georgebrothersfuneral.com. The family has requested those in attendance to please wear a face covering and practice social distancing at the service and visitation. A private family committal service will be held at Guilford Memorial Park at a later date.
Richard was born, in Davidson County, to the late Claude and Magdalene Leonard Sumner. He retired from Sears Mail Order after thirty-three years of service and was a longtime member of New Testament Baptist Church. Richard was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. He was an avid bowler and competed in numerous national tournaments across the United States. Richard also enjoyed baseball, fishing, “real” country music, black coffee, and anything sweet.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Alice Best Sumner; one sister, Margaret Dinkins; and two brothers, Kenneth Sumner and Wayne Sumner.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Judy Sumner; daughter, Cathy Thomas (Jeff) of Greensboro; grandson, Philip Thomas of Raleigh; sister, Carolyn Lingo (Dennis) of Greensboro; stepsons, Eric Wilson and Joey Wilson (Kylie) both of Greensboro; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
