Mrs. Dovie Garner Manuel Gregory

On September 18, 2023, Dovie Garner Manuel Gregory passed away at Friends Homes Guilford, at the age of 94.

Dovie was born Dovie Evonne Garner on April 14th, 1929 to Edgar A. Garner and Hattie Mae Simpson and spent her childhood and early adult life in the Cone Mills White Oak Community in Greensboro. It was in White Oak where she met Lawrence Manuel. On September 23rd, 1947 they were married in Greensboro where they raised two children, daughter Vicky, and son Jeffrey. This union lasted for 45 years until Lawrence passed away in January 1992. Dovie spent the next twelve years enjoying being mother and grandmother, volunteer and friend.

In 2004, Dovie met Donnell Gregory and they were married on June 4th, 2004. Dovie and Don resided in Greensboro and were married for 6 years until Don passed away in June 2010.

Dovie was a dedicated employee who spent 34 years with Western Electric/AT&T, retiring from there in 1989. Dovie was a lover of books and was an avid reader and a master with crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed embroidery and shopping. Dovie was committed to staying active and enjoyed volunteering for the American Red Cross, was a lifetime member of the Communication Workers of America and was active in Pioneers Young at Heart Club. She attended both Glenwood Friends Meeting and Lake Townsend Baptist Church.

Dovie was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence Manuel, her second husband Donnell Gregory, her grand-daughter Darcie Maria Manuel, her sisters Gladys Garner Busick, Thelma Garner Gouge, and her brothers Edgar Garner Jr., James Garner, Melvin Garner, and Rev. Carl K Garner.

Dovie is survived by her daughter, Vicky M. James (Dale), son Jeffrey D. Manuel (Patricia), Grandson Kevin S. James (Lindsay), Granddaughter Stacie L. Manuel and Angela M. Mainhart (Charles), great granddaughters Charlotte and Lawren Mainhart, Kennedy James, and great grandsons Braxton and Marcus James.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and care shown to Dovie by the dedicated staff of the Whittier Memory Care Unit. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be directed to Friends Homes Guilford Resident Assistant Fund, 925 New Garden Rd. Greensboro, NC 27410.

Dovie will lie in state at George Brothers Funeral Service from 9:00am-1:00pm on Friday, September 22, 2023. Graveside service will be held 3:00pm Friday, September 22, 2023 at Westminster Gardens Cemetery officiated by Pastor Robert Kidd.
