Mrs. Gloria Compton Ray Obituary

Mrs. Gloria Compton Ray, of Allendale, SC; born September 4th, 1936 made her way to her heavenly home on Sunday, April the 12th, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Gloria is forever missed by her husband James Marshal Ray of 69 years, she will always be his "gal."

Mrs. Ray is lovingly remembered by her daughter Cindy (Frankie) Springs; sons, Dwight Marshal Ray & Dre Titus Ray; nephew James (Judy) Compton, who was like a son to her; brothers-in-law Roland Ray, Alvin Ray, Thomas Ray & Dale Ray; sisters-in-law Emma Lou Edwards & Ella Mae Owens. She adored her grandchildren Jessie (Will) Madison, Toby Ray, Jennifer (Richard) Buerkle who was like a granddaughter to her & Braydon Ray (Andy). Gloria was further blessed with three great grandchildren; Riley Grace, Owen James & Parker Tate Madison (Will & Jessie).

Once married, James & Gloria settled in Greensboro, NC. Gloria briefly worked at Southern Life until she & James had children. As they raised their family in church, Gloria's line of work began to align directly with her passion for following and leading others to Jesus. She served as the Pastor's Secretary, including Pastor Jake Thornhill for 25 years; as well as the Financial Secretary at Hunter Hills Baptist Church & Life Community Church. Most afternoons, after work, Gloria could be found shopping at the local department stores. Some of her favorite times were spent down at the coast with her family; taking long beach walks to the pier and back, trips to Dairy Queen for Dilly bars, searching for shells. No beach vacation was complete without countless hands of 'Hand and Foot', which often led to lively debates about the rules regarding Red Threes.

Her heavenly welcoming committee was surely robust, as she was reunited with her father James Manning Compton & mother Flossie Knight Compton; sisters Dorothy (Truman) Parks & Lucia (Bernard) McAlhaney; brothers James, John & Wallace (Helen) Compton; her son Andre Manning Ray; mother-in-law Ruth Ray; father-in-law John Ray; sister-in-law Dorothy Church; brothers-in-law Howard Ray, Robert Ray, Leroy Ray; grandson Joshua Allen Springs; niece Bernadette McAlhaney & many life long friends.

Gloria enjoyed any time spent with her loved ones, but Sunday dinner was the highlight of her week & so fitting that she departed from this world at the usual time everyone would leave the dinner table for a walk to the pond.

A funeral service will be conducted 2:00pm Thursday April 16, 2026, at Life Community Church. A committal service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, April 20, 2026, at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
