Nellie Ray Murphy age 92, passed on December 24, 2025, at her home in Greensboro, NC.
Funeral will be 1:00 PM Friday, January 2, 2026 at New Testament Baptist Church with burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday, January 1, 2026 at George Brothers Funeral Service.
She was born on February 24, 1933, in Blair, SC (Fairfield County) to the late John Robert Young and Bessie Louise Griffin-Young. She attended McCrorey-Liston School in Blair, SC. She was a member of Young’s Memorial Church in Washington, D.C., where she was an active Missionary and a choir member. She was a teacher’s aide at Winston Elementary School in Washington, DC. She also cared for a few children in the neighborhood where she lived. She and her family moved to Greensboro, NC in the 1992. She became a member of New Testament Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. She attended the Senior Enrichment Center at New Light Baptist Church, were she enjoyed fellowshipping with several of the ladies and gentleman that attended. She loved to play dominos. We called her the Domino Queen.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Murphy Jr., her son Jimmy Lee Young and her grandson Tavoris Young and 15 siblings.
Nellie is survived by her children John, Kenny Ray, Gail and Robin, her daughter law-in Olivia (Lib) Young, her grandchildren Travis (Christol), Bobby Jr., Terence, Deirdre (Michael), and Ricardi (Shemeka) and 10 great grandchildren.
Also surviving is her sister in-law Ida Mae Johnson and Willie Louis Murphy and a host of nieces and nephews.
