Richard was born April 12, 1948 in Burlington, NC to Thomas and Ruth Maines Hatchel and passed away peacefully in his home March 16, 2026. He was one of four children and preceded in death by his parents, sister Virginia Ward (Ray) and brother, Roger Hatchel.
Richard will be remembered as a hard worker and instilled a strong work ethic in his children. He worked many years in commercial HVAC fabrication. As a supervisor with AB Fab, Inc., he was fair, wise and a patient teacher. Richard also worked many years as a truck driver, like his father. He loved driving and traveled over much of the United States. He especially loved driving for Martin Livestock where he developed lifelong relationships with the owners and drivers that know him as “Metal Bender.” He later retired as a driver with Box-Board Products, Inc.
Richard will mostly be remembered for his love of people. He always had a smile and loved to laugh. He always loved unconditionally and would drop everything to help someone in need. He deeply loved his family most of all. He’s survived by his wife, Linda Hatchel and children: Julie Hatchel (Mike Roth), Jeff Hatchel (Doni), Melinda Gilbert (Jeremy), Melissa Hatchel (Donald Sweet) and “adopted son” Danny Fields (Stormy) and two step-children; Nicki Casson (Jim) and Robby Harden. He adored his grandchildren; Levi Stubblefield, Jesse and Trinity Hatchel, Carson Hatchel, Lilly, Maddy and Kaitlyn Gilbert, Tristan Dial, Mason West, Tanner West, Peyton Johnson, Rowan and Elijah Casson and six great grandsons. He is also survived by his sister, Emma Jean Wilson (Steve); sister-in-law, Della Hatchel; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are being provided by George Brothers Funeral Service. A Celebration of Life will be held March 20, 2026 at Centre Friends Meeting, 325 NC Hwy 62 E, Greensboro NC 27406. Visitation with the family begins at 1pm in the sanctuary followed by the service at 2pm.
