Sharon McBride Phelps, 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends whose lives she touched so deeply.
There will be a private graveside service held for Mrs. Phelps, and the family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at George Brothers Funeral Service.
Born on March 30, 1948, Sharon was lovingly named after the “Rose of Sharon” mentioned in the Bible. From an early age, it was clear she had been blessed with a special gift for music. By just three years old, she could play many songs on her little toy piano, a God-given talent she continued to share and enjoy throughout her life.
Sharon was the apple of her daddy’s eye, the sunshine to her momma, and the best big sister to her brother, Ted. She devoted her life to loving and caring for her family, who she deeply cherished. She was a loving mother to René and Chris, as well as mother-in-law to Mark and Amber.
Nothing brought Sharon greater joy than her family. She was a loving wife to her husband, Latham who passed away in 2008. She adored her four grandchildren — Morgan (Jamie), Cameron (Savannah), Riley, and Liam — and treasured every moment spent with them. Her heart grew even fuller with the arrival of her precious great-granddaughter, Ellie, who brought her immeasurable happiness. Sharon was also a devoted and loving aunt to Josh and Nicole, whom she loved dearly, and she deeply cherished her many cousins and treasured friends.
In her younger years, Sharon’s beauty and vibrant spirit were well known. She was crowned her high school’s Homecoming Queen as well as beauty pageant winner. Yet those who knew her best often spoke not only of her outward beauty, but of the kindness, warmth, and grace that radiated from within.
Sharon spent her professional career with AT&T serving in various positions over the years. She especially enjoyed working with the international travel group and the experiences and friendships that came along the way.
A strong Christian and devoted lover of Jesus, Sharon lived her faith through her compassion, generosity, and unwavering love for others. She had a special talent for flower arranging and decor, and found great joy in creating beauty around her. She also loved true crime tv, reading suspense novels, the beach, beach music, The Carolina Tar Heels, and the simple happiness of being surrounded by the people she loved most.
Sharon will be remembered as kind and generous, vivacious, funny, and full of life. Her laughter, loving spirit, and beautiful heart will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Though our hearts grieve her loss, we take comfort in the countless memories she leaves behind and the enduring legacy of love she gave so freely to everyone around her.
