Obituary

Shelby Jean Richardson Lasley, 85, of Greensboro went to her eternal home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, April 16, 2023.

Funeral will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Vickrey United Methodist Church with Reverend Carolyn R. Franks officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

Jean was born in Ellerbe, NC on February 12, 1938 to the late Samuel Hunter
Richardson and Lula Wilkins Richardson.

She was a member of Vickrey United Methodist Church where she served faithfully for more than 50 years.

Jean lived her life as a Martha, never seeking the limelight, always willing to assist in the background with prep work, clean-up and the mundane chores that make any event or gathering a success.

She was a nurturer, a loving spouse of 54 years to Donald and a devoted mother to Roger and Len. For 61 years she focused her selfless love, her efforts and energy on providing a rich life for her beloved Len. She dearly loved her brothers and sisters, cherished all her kin and dedicated time and effort to her relationships with family and friends.

Jean was a country girl, born and raised on a farm in the sandhills of Richmond County.
She was no stranger to hard work and perhaps at her happiest when she had her hands in the dirt. She had the skills of a master gardener. Her grapevines and fruit bushes flourished, and she was able to coax tiny heirloom seeds and wilted cuttings into row after row of fresh fruits, vegetables and stunning flowers. True to her generous spirit, Jean shared many of those flowers with sick friends, shut-ins and her church for weekly services, funerals or celebrations.

Jean also had an inquiring mind and was forever seeking to learn. She did not just try new skills, she mastered them. She created hundreds of porcelain dolls, constructing the bodies then designing and stitching clothing and accessories for them. She learned to quilt, to do needlework, to paint and make jewelry. She became skilled at woodworking and built her own dining room table. She made pottery and designed personalized Christmas gifts. She took many cooking classes, and canned or froze the fruits and vegetables from her garden, always careful to save enough fruit for gallons of homemade ice cream.

Above all, Jean was humble, kind and gentle, and her life was a gift to all who knew her.
Scripture tells us that we are here to serve others, not to be served. Jean’s life was certainly an example, and for that, God truly blessed her.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Donald B. Lasley, brothers Otis Lee Richardson, Samuel Curtis Richardson, Norman Hunter Richardson, Nolan Lane Richardson and sisters Ellene Sue Richardson, Lula Ernestine Richardson and Polly Richardson Glidewell.

She is survived by sons, Roger Lasley of Archdale and Len Lasley of the home. Sisters, Delano Richardson Williams of Biscoe and Faye Richardson Lovelace of McLeansville as well as countless nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 PM Tuesday in the church fellowship hall prior to the service.
