Sidney Woody Obituary

Sidney Lynn Woody, 91, of McLeansville, NC left his earthly home to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, May 11th, 2026. Lynn was born on August 11, 1934, in Green Mountain/Burnsville, NC, the son of the late Rassie and Ocie Randolph Woody.

Lynn was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church for 62 years where he served his Heavenly Father in many different ministries throughout those decades. He taught the Men’s I Sunday School Class during his entire church membership, while also serving as trustee chairman and had also served as a deacon. He became the Director of Maintenance in 1995 and took care of the buildings and grounds for 28 years.

After graduating from high school, Lynn attended Lees-Mcrae College in Banner Elk, NC for 2 years, where he met his best friend and wife of almost 67 years. He was drafted in 1954 to serve in the U.S. Army for 2 years before going back to school to attend East Tennessee State University on a baseball scholarship. During his time at ETSU, he married Peggy Sasser Woody on August 11th, 1957. They always joked about having their anniversary on his birthday so he would never forget it.

Lynn and Peggy moved to Greensboro shortly after getting married and Lynn began his first teaching position at Central High School where he taught Industrial Arts. A few years later, he made the move to Ben L. Smith High School where he taught Industrial Arts and Math for the next 12 years. He made such a positive impact on so many young people over his years of teaching. Many times, he was the one who would listen to their needs during vulnerable times in their lives and/or just be there to encourage them. Once Lynn became ready for his next challenge in education, he became the Maintenance Director for Greensboro City Schools. He also worked in the finance department planning & budgeting for new construction within the district. In 1993, Greensboro City Schools and Guilford County Schools merged into one district. After a couple of years working within the merged Guilford County Schools, he retired in 1995.

White Lake, NC was such a “Happy Place” for Lynn and Peggy where they met countless friends and had so many fond, happy memories with them, as well as their family. While Lynn was still working and Peggy was out for the summer with the kids, he would drive down to spend every weekend with them. Once Lynn & Peggy both retired in 1995, they would spend their summers together at the lake enjoying time with their friends, kids & grandkids cooking out, making "Pop's" famous ice cream, swimming, fishing, water-skiing and tubing behind their boat.

Lynn had many hobbies. If he wasn’t tending to his garden of veggies, mowing his yard, watering his many beautiful flowers or watching sports (football, basketball, baseball & racing), he was in the woods with his dogs (beagles). He shared his love of running the dogs with his kids and grandkids. They always enjoyed going "rabbit huntin” with Pop.

Surviving are his daughter, Janet Woody Carter and husband Freddie of Randleman, NC; granddaughters, Abby (husband Brett) and Sarah; son, Sidney Randolph “Randy” Woody and wife Paula of McLeansville, NC; grandchildren, Tristan (wife Emily), Mikayla, Selah, Brody, Kyra and Canaan; great-grandchildren, Marjorie and Nathanael; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Sasser Woody, his brother, Shelton Woody and sisters, Jean Eppley and Geraldine Rector.
