Thomas Clark Obituary

Born on December 24th, 1939, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Gerald spent his life rooted in the rich agricultural heritage of tobacco farming, which was both his livelihood and his passion. He was a graduate of the 1958 class of Sumner High School and served in the National Guard Reserve. A man of great strength and character, Gerald was a true reflection of the North Carolina spirit – dedicated and resilient. He understood the true meaning of community and never met a stranger. He was a social butterfly that loved talking with everyone and could often be heard sharing his quick wit with a joke. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of staying true to one’s roots.

He shared his love through acts of service and quality time. Those who knew him best will miss his tomato and strawberry deliveries during the summer months along with the companionship he brought. He enjoyed the simple things in life, like watching the birds, enjoying a cold glass bottle of soda, and taking in the colored blooms of the crepe myrtle trees.

Gerald’s greatest accomplishment was his devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Iris, of 43 years. She stood by his side every step of the way. Together, they built a life filled with love and hard work, farming side by side, sharing laughter over card games with friends, and serving as the glue that brought the family together for holidays and homemade meals.

When visiting Gerald’s home, he would often use the phrase “Sit down and rest your bones”. On January 22, 2025, the Lord whispered his name and called him home to do just that, rest his bones and delight in eternal life with our Savior. He is now plowing the fields of heaven and singing his favorite classic country songs. As a special friend once said, “God only takes the best”.

Gerald was proceeded in death by his wife, Iris Clark and son, Jimmy Clark.

Gerald is survived by his three children: sons Dennis Byrd and his wife Sharon, Phil Byrd and his wife Pat, and daughter Debbie Voss and her husband David. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In his later years, Gerald was blessed with the companionship of his dear friend, Carolyn Parrish, whose presence brought him comfort and happiness.

A celebration of life held graveside will take place on Tuesday, January 28th at 1:00pm at Guilford Memorial Park conducted by Rev. J.R. Gossett. Family will receive friends directly after the graveside service.
