William Summers, Sr. Obituary

William L. Summers, Sr., 79, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Bill was born in Newport News Virginia on January 9, 1942 in the early morning while a snow blizzard was going on to the late Walter Lee (Lud) Summers and Mildred Biggs Summers. He was the grandson of Walter and Dora Byrd Summers. Bill spent the first three years or so living in Virginia. About 1945, he moved to Greensboro. Bill, his mother and uncle were in the truck his uncle was driving and his dad was bundled up in the back with the furniture.

Bill graduated from Page High School in 1961 and spent thirty years as a police officer (Feb, ’63-Jun, ’92) with the Greensboro Police Department. After retiring from the police department, he worked twenty-five years driving the school bus for Guilford County Schools.

He was in fellowship with Aycock Ministries and was a Sunday School teacher at New Life Fellowship Pentecostal Church. Bill served as deacon and was certified into the Gospel Ministry, licensed to preach-Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Greensboro. He completed two years of Bible School at the Greensboro Bible Institute. Bill’s sermons were broadcast on WWMO and WPET radio.

Bill was a Mason serving at Revolution Lodge No. 552 A.F. and A.M. He also served as the curator of the Revolution Masonic Museum and awarded for fifty years as a Master Mason and degree in Scottish Rite. A noble of the Mystic Shrine-Oasis Temple, Charlotte, NC.

Bill was awarded for dedicated service to Guilford County Schools and received a certificate of Merit from the City of Greensboro for faithful service.

Bill enjoyed antiques and collectibles with over fifty years dealing. He worked repairing clocks and liked birds, blue grass music and many favorite hymns. He was the family training tour director for the State Street Church of God Land Travels, taking multiple trips to the Holy Land for study.

He completed a course diploma; certified study from Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, NC and was a Civil War Preservation Trust member.

He was licensed by the City of Greensboro-working concessions-open air sales, sundries, peddler by vehicle.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Doug.

Survivors include his wife of eighteen years, Pamela Ross Summers of the home; two sons, William (Will) Lee Summers Jr. and wife Tabitha B. Summers of Liberty and James Walter Summers (Jamy) and his wife, Amelia A. Summers of Kernersville; step-sons, Adam Stork and wife, Caroline and Joshua (Josh) Stork all of Charlotte; step daughters, Jennifer Dywer, Laura Cotton, husband Kevin, and Kelly Rhew, husband Jason; nine grandchildren, Sara, Katie, Jordan, Matthew, Taylor, Blake, Kaylee, Olivia and Ophelia; ten great grandchildren, Christopher, Garrett, Jonathan, Abigail, Temperance, Leo, Jacob, Joshua, Hudson, and Elijah.

Loving and special cherished friends, Freddie and Debi, Tim and Jeanine, and Tony.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on 1:00 PM Sunday, January 24 at Aycock Fellowship, 1036 South Josephine Boyd Street in Greensboro with Pastor Mark Hurt officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Park. Bill will be entombed alongside his second wife, Marian Smith at Lakeview and a space remains on the other side of Bill for his third wife Pam someday to join him there.

Bill was a man who loved the Lord with all his heart, a good man full of spirit and wisdom. As a Mason, nobility, faith, hope and charity are values evidenced through service to fellow citizens as a fraternity member.
